Salah satu pencemaran\nutama adalah pencemaran organik dari\nlimbah domestik dan industri ke danau,\nsungai, atau air laut. Kandungan limbah\norganik yang tinggi meningkatkan kebutuhan\noksigen di air yang menerimanya, sehingga\nmengganggu keseimbangan alami secara\ndramatis. Contohnya, mikroorganisme akan\ntumbuh dengan cepat mengkonsumsi zat\norganik tersebut dan menghabiskan oksigen\ndi air, membunuh organisme alami, seperti\nikan dan tumbuhan air. Keadaannya bahkan\nlebih buruk jika sumber limbah organik\ntersebut adalah zat beracun.
